Oregon Zoo's Birds of Prey Bird Show

The Oregon Zoo is starting a new stage show this Saturday (5/23/09) with birds of prey. I have a membership to the zoo, so I have been there to witness their rehearsal twice now. Aside from the corny attempts at humor, the show is pretty cool because you can watch the birds fly right over your head if you're sitting in the right place near the middle of the amphitheater or near a perch. Each bird flies to various perches in the audience and back to the stage. The show starts with a golden eagle, which performed flawlessly each time. Then a falcon also flew back and forth from a few perches. Then the vulture makes his appearance. Both times, the turkey vulture went straight to the lawn to scavenge for people food. The trainer said that the vulture has been performing for 25 years and knows that people food tastes better then anything its supposed to eat. Next was the owl, who performed perfectly the first show I witnessed, then flew up into the stage rafters the second time. Finally, the bald eagle flies in from a far away perch. The eagle has a broken wing, so it can only fly downward once into the stage. The second time, it took a while for the eagle to decide to fly, but when he did, it was beautiful. It flew right over our head. |
